I'm thinking it will have to be some sort of router to router configuration, but I really don't know...How do I get internet connection from upstairs to downstairs?
The best thing to do is get a wireless router. Then you can get wireless network cards for you computer. Nor wires needed to get internet to your pc (pcs)
Here's some info that should help you out (from MSFT): http://www.microsoft.com/windows/product鈥?/a>

The simplest way is to just buy a wireless router.
Though, trust me... they do make ethernet cords that will reach from one floor to another. You're just not going to find them at Best Buy.
It sounds like you do not currently have a router, perhaps just the modem for cable or DSL. If you get a wire router you can operate several computers by wire. Ethernet wires can be very long and can be found almost anywhere, including Home Depot. Look around to see if it is possible to run a wire down the heating duct or some other way that can be hidden.
If not you need a wifi router and a wifi adapter for the computer that is downstairs.. These help connect wirelessly, but walls and floors, 2.4mhz wireless phones, appliances etc can block the signal so it might work well or it might not work very well. There are antennas called High Gain antennas that really make a big difference so try to get a router and adapter that can use these types of antennas. How do I get internet connection from upstairs to downstairs?
You can either replace your router with one that has builtin wireless, or you can buy an Access Point to extend your network with wireless.
The best solution is a always a wire...
that being said, you can try a wifi router upstairs and wireless cards downstairs.
Or if you want to go really ghetto check this out:

Its cheaper to run a wire tho...
Other than a wireless router you have a few different options, but the only other clean less expensive option with out making a mess would be to use a Powerline, which takes your electrical system and allows internet access to run through out. This will be your best bet if you do not want a wireless system.
