okay from my experience, are you running torrent download or any other things on background? If you do, that is the reason why your internet connection is not working. Switch off the programs on background and try connecting the internet again.What is wrong with my internet connection?
It can be a spyware on the laptop itself.Download zonealarm internet security suite from other laptop and then install on the one which is giving problems.....it can also be the drivers on the particular laptop.Re-install internet modem drivers and see if that helps.What is wrong with my internet connection?
First, check either Local Area Network connected or not ? (Suppose to be "connected").
It appear Connected, then network cable is OK. refer to the IP address (either manual assigned or automatically).

Maybe your port for the connection is closed. Why not, try removing the dongle/ cable and fixing it in again?
Or maybe if you are on wireless, try moving to a place with more signal. Like on the top floor of your house/
