How do phone or internet signals coexist on one line?

I've wondered this for a long time...

What actually happens in the box that connects your house to the telephone line, and how, exactly, is it connected? Does one twist from the phone line's wiring intersect? Does the entire phone line pass through? Is there a separate line in the plastic housing for each house?

And if there isn't a separate line for each house, then how does the traffic get filtered and modified? Why couldn't you listen to someone else's call?

This also applies to Internet lines. How do phone or internet signals coexist on one line?
There is no magic in the box on the side of your house. It just provides a electrical connection between the telephone company's cable and your house wiring. It also functions as a distribution point for the wiring going to the individual rooms in your house and provides protection from lightning strikes that might ride on the copper wire. There is a separate paths for each telephone line back to the telephone central office for each line. That path maybe in the form of analog signal on copper wire in a cable containing 100's of wires or it maybe in the form of a dedicated channel on a digital facility that runs over either copper or fiber optic cable with 1000's over circuits. The DSL signal rides on the copper wire portion of the path in the form digital signal that is filtered out of the talk circuit by the filters in your telephone cords, but allowed to enter your DSL modem. DSL signal will originate in the central office on any copper connect or at the remote end of digital facility where the copper to your home begins. How do phone or internet signals coexist on one line?
It is actually very simple.

With advances in electronics, they figured out how to send much higher frequency signal over the telephone lines than was ever thought possible. They are then able to filter the different frequency bands and the low frequency signal goes to the telephone while the high frequency signal goes to the DSL modem.

The telephone companies switching system just routes the signal to you which is supposed to go to you.
