How do connect to the internet through a local network?

I live near a public library and they provide a new public wi-fi network. I have already a pci ethernet card and I have installed it on my computer. My computer says I am connected to the network and the speed is 100mbps, but when I open Internet Explorer, a page connot be displayed appears. Why does this happen? If it matters, I also have a dial-up connection. Even when I disconnect the dial-up, I still can't acess the internet through the network. well your question is a bit confusing. You say its a Wi-Fi network %26amp; @ the same time you say you're connecting through a Ethernet port...

Ethernet card (port) is wire base %26amp; Wi-Fi is Radio based (wireless), What exactly did you mean??



Well say anyhow you're connected to the network, then find out if the library system uses a proxy server or anthing like that to access the internet... If so you have to manually configure it in the web browser.

there is one thing I need to ask. Did you manually gave the IP to your connections. If so you have to manually configure other stuff as DNS IP %26amp; proxy information... Or if its automatically given most of the time the DHCP will automatically assign all of them for you... But anyway YOU need to find out about these from the library service...

more than likely the problem is that you do not have dns setup, how are you getting an IP address? if your using dhcp then it might be another problem such as whatever you are connecting to is not allowing you, but if your assigning your IP then you will need to asign a dns server IP as well, you will need to ask the library what to use for dns or better yet if they provide dhcp (if they do use that and it will setup dns for you)

Depends on the Library. How are they providing the wireless? Is it even intended for wireless use?

At my library, you need a valid library card. Opening your web browser provides a "gateway" screen, where your library card number is entered. Then you're given the right to browse whatever you like.
