My laptop is only a few years old and now everything I run starts and stops working. Anything from Internet explorer to the side bar. I have tried everything in my knowledge including defragging, cleaning the redgistry, ending program's and cleaning space, and virus scanning (my computer runs on windows 7) can anyone help me? I can't afford to take it to a shop so any advice is amazing, thanksWhat can I do to stop my laptop constantly freezing and giving "not responding" messages?
It is simply a windows registry problem, sometimes in removing any program from the system would remove essential files from it, that why your system start freezing after sometime, use Reginout registry manager to get rid of these problems.
There can be many problems causing this, I'd better take it to a local IT geek. But it may be related to your HDD as I had pretty much the same problem some times ago and I discovered my HDD was causing this, so I switched my HDD and voila. You may use this to track problems with your hard disk http://www.ntfs.com/disk-monitor.htm. It's freeware and should work just OK. Some additional information about your laptop wont hurt, starting from the specs. And another guess maybe corrupted Windows, you may do a windows reinstall, select custom install(clean install) and it may resolve this but still, we need more details about the system you're running. What can I do to stop my laptop constantly freezing and giving "not responding" messages?
Sometimes Laptops freez because of bad sectors on its hard drive. If this happen more often then usual then you can be at risk of a drive falure. Bas sectors are unfortunately a permanent damage and cannot be fixed. I would suggest you at this time is that keep taking regular back-ups for your important data and try to replace this drive as soon as you can because been in a data loss situation is not a nice experience but if you are not sure what to do next, you may be in for another nightmare.
We offer data recovery ourselves and we are located in Princeton, NJ, USA. You can contact my company via the URL in my signature. We have handled many similar cases and have 99% of success rate. Plus you really don鈥檛 want someone less experienced in data recovery experimenting at your expense.

It would help me if you could write me some specs about your laptop. But the most reasons this hapens, is you need to format your drive. If you have 2 partitions, assuming C is where your Windows are, and D where you keep your DATA, just insert your CD/DVD instalation disc, reboot your PC and reinstall windows. But before you do that, save all of your important data that are kept on the drive where your windows are located. When you get to the instalation window, you will see that you have a partition manager, just select the Windows partition, format it, and install new windows on it. This means you will losse ALL of your data on the partition you selected, and that you will have to reinstall every software you had. Takes aprox. 3-4 hours to get it done, but you have to do it sometimes. What can I do to stop my laptop constantly freezing and giving "not responding" messages?
How many a few years old actually?
Basically you should get a new one every 3 to 4 years just to keep on top of things.
The ever more resource demanding newer applications will skip, stutter and freeze on old hardware, especially in Windows.
Linux is the best operating system, as it makes even older machines run most new applications smooth, due to the fact that it uses less system resources and manages them better.
Also the main reason could also be a virus or other malware infection (the curse of Windows users).
Here is what i recommend you try before you throw your old laptop away and buy a new one:
1. On your keyboard push the Windows symbol key and the "R" key together. In the prompt that opens type msconfig and hit enter.
A new window opens, go to the start up tab and de-select 9un-check) all except for your antivirus, firewall and maybe your Windows Gadget Sidebar. Click Apply, OK and close.
Restart your PC and repeat the procedure to ensure that the changes were applied.
You don't need all software programs to run at start up, just open them manually when needed and close them when done. It will free your computer's resources and increase speed and performance.
Also do a disk clean up, disk check for errors and disk defragment on all drives and partitions (C, D, E, etc).
Install and run CCleaner to remove registry keys not needed and other junk.
2. Virus and other infection removal:
Most of the time, you cannot safely, effectively and completely remove a virus infection in a Windows environment, as your operating system and antivirus protection can and will get corrupted.
Here is the best way to remove a virus:
What you should do if you know or suspect that your Windows computer was infected by a virus, worm, trojan or other malware:
Go to a different, healthy, non-infected PC or laptop and download both the BitDefender and the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CD's (free downloads).
Download links for both:
http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_c鈥?/a>
http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/res鈥?/a>
Burn both downloaded iso files to CD with an iso burner software. If you do not have an iso burning software installed, I recommend getting the CDBurnerXP (free software) from here:
http://cdburnerxp.se/
Once you burned the recovery CD's, return to the infected computer and put the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD in your CD/DVD drive and boot from CD (set your boot up options in BIOS to CD boot as first option if it does not boot from CD at first)
Once your infected computer boots into the Recovery CD Linux environment, first update the virus definition database from the Internet server, than perform a complete scan of your desktop computer or laptop (all hard drives and/or partitions). Remove (delete) any infections found, and shut down your desktop computer or laptop.
Remove the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD and insert the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CD.
Repeat the same procedure as for BitDefender above.
After scanning with those 2 Anti-virus Recovery CD's, your system should be virus free, and will function properly again.
Good luck.
Try rebooting it back to factory settings or an early date when it worked ok. If that doesnt work chances are one of your processors is busted. which means you will have to get that replaced.
hope this helped

Number 1 mistake:
using internet explorer gives anything and everything out there direct access to your WINDOWS REGISTRY, thats why BIG NONO.
http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/up/ssho鈥?/a> (the explorer meme)
basically do what it says.
download firefox, update it and levitate to a trusty website called http://majorgeeks.com/
Now, follow the instructions in order, no skipping.
download the following files but dont install until you got everything.
ccleaner
malwarebytes
pandasoft cloud antivirus.
step 2, click start, control panel and find "uninstall programs"
Uninstall anything, you suspect that you will never use.
Uninstall all anti viruses firewalls etc.
Now this might take an hour or 3, bear with me, this will set you on the right path.
after the last and final restart, first install Pandasoft, skipp the full check for now and install Malwarebytes and then ccleaner.
dont run any yet, just UPDATE them all to the latest versions.
last and final step.
disconnect your computer from the internet, pull the wire, or turn of wifi etc.
first do a ccleaner system check, clean out everything fix your registry etc!
then do a FULL malwarebytes scan.
then do a full panda anti virus scan.
Now, restart your running like new computer and Activate windows defender, because windows defender+malwarebytes+panda are the only 3 anti viruses out there that can work together at the same time THE ONLY COMBINATION OUT THERE, be the only kid on the block running 3 antiviruses at the same time.
oh ya, one last thing, reconnect to the internet same way you disconnected, (if you haven't already.)
use the 3 coincidentally lightest antiviruses out there and use firefox exclusively from now on, forget internet explorer.
get a new one
